What is stainless steel laser cutting?
Stainless steel laser cutting is the cutting of stainless sheet to a DXF drawing with a fiber laser. With nitrogen as the assist gas, the cut edge does not oxidise, giving bright, clean edges that often need no further processing.
Food and kitchen equipment, signage, machine panels, decorative parts and flat patterns for sheet metal products are typical jobs. See Laser cutting for general cutting information and Stainless steel for material properties.
Stainless steel grades
| Grade | Key property | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 304 | The most common grade, good corrosion resistance | Food equipment, kitchens, general fabrication |
| 316 / 316L | More resistant to chlorides and chemicals | Marine, chemical, medical |
| 430 | Ferritic, magnetic, more economical | Decorative parts, appliances |
| 201 | Economical, lower corrosion resistance | Indoor decorative applications |
Surface options
| Finish | Appearance | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2B | Matte grey | The most common and economical |
| BA (bright annealed) | Bright, reflective | Decorative applications |
| Brushed (satin) | Grained matte | Kitchen equipment, panels |
| Film-coated sheet | Protective PVC film | Prevents scratches during cutting and bending |
Requesting film-coated sheet for visible surfaces prevents scratches during cutting and handling. For brushed finishes, mark the grain direction on the drawing.
Thickness and cut quality
| Feature | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Common thickness range | 0.5 – 15 mm (depends on machine power) |
| Assist gas | Nitrogen (oxide-free, bright edge) |
| Dimensional tolerance | About ±0.1 mm on thin sheet |
| Minimum hole diameter | Usually equal to the sheet thickness |
On thick sheet, slight edge taper can occur. Exact values depend on the manufacturer’s machine.
DXF preparation and design
- Prepare the DXF at 1:1 scale, in millimetres, with closed contours.
- Avoid hole diameters smaller than the sheet thickness.
- If parts will be bent, follow bending rules and create a sheet metal fabrication request.
- Mark the visible face and grain direction.
For a detailed checklist, see How to Prepare DXF Files for Laser Cutting.
Post-cutting operations
| Operation | What it provides |
|---|---|
| Deburring | Safe, clean edges |
| Press brake bending | Three-dimensional form |
| TIG welding | Clean, aesthetic joints |
| Pickling / passivation | Removes weld discolouration, improves corrosion resistance |
| Brushing / polishing | Decorative surface |
What drives the price
- Grade and thickness: 316 costs more than 304; thickness increases cutting time.
- Finish: BA, brushed and film-coated sheets are priced differently from 2B.
- Cut length and number of holes.
- Nitrogen consumption and secondary operations.
What we need for a quote
- DXF file (1:1, mm)
- Stainless grade and thickness
- Finish (2B, BA, brushed, film-coated)
- Quantity
- Any bending, welding and finishing requirements
Frequently asked questions
Does stainless steel darken at the cut edge?
With nitrogen as the assist gas, the edge does not oxidise and stays bright. Cutting with oxygen can leave a dark oxide layer on the edge.
How thick can stainless steel be laser cut?
Common fiber lasers cut stainless steel up to about 15 mm; the exact limit depends on machine power.
Why is film-coated stainless recommended?
The protective film prevents scratches on the visible face during cutting, bending and handling. It is removed after assembly.
What is the difference between 304 and 430?
304 is austenitic, non-magnetic and highly corrosion resistant. 430 is ferritic and magnetic; it is more economical but less corrosion resistant.
